Fire The Vital Steps Kitchen Fire Safety | Safety VideoTo many people, fire is something which happens to other people and could never happen where they work or live, but how many people could honestly say that they have never burnt the toast or had the heat up just a little too high when frying something.

The fact is that fires in kitchens do happen and while most of the fires will tend to be relatively small and are brought under control quickly, this doesn't always happen, for example: A fire at Heathrow Airport, which started in the one of the fast food outlets. A member of staff heard a 'rumble' from inside the ducting system, at around 4:30 in the morning. Although he followed the correct procedures the fire spread through the ducting and the whole of Terminal 1 was evacuated. Fire-fighters from the Airport Fire Service and London Fire Brigade fought the fire for around four hours. That morning around 300 flights were cancelled, which resulted in around 36,000 passengers being delayed. The roads in and around Heathrow Airport, which is the worlds busiest, were gridlocked for hours. The damage caused to the terminal was estimated at over half a million pounds, but the cost to business is likely to have been many more millions in cancelled meetings and deadlines which were missed. At the time of the fire about 150 people were in the terminal. However, at peak times there are around 15,000 visiting or flying every hour.
